Vehicles with delco ecm have a common issue where the fuel injectors leak into the cylinder causing engine to loose compression. The lowered compression causes hard start (if able to start at all) and if and when it starts the vehicle emits a cloud of white smoke for several minutes. When vehicle is in drive the engine idles hunts constantly. Engine stalls while driving making braking and steering very difficult and dangerous. Ecm has been replaced but unfortunately the damage is done to the engine and needs a rebuild. Multiple vehicles have reported this issue from 2009 - 2013 Toyota Corolla ranging from 100 miles - 179,000 miles. It doesn't seem to have any different effect with mileage or maintenance.

Engine Stall problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla 3

My wife was travelling on I-270 near columbus, OH on 6/19/2016 afternoon (around 2 pm) in a Toyota Corolla s 2009. She took an exit 22b at around 60-65 mph and the vehicle after giving brief beeps suffered from an abrupt engine stall. She lost control of the vehicle momentarily as the steering and break jammed. She regained control after great effort and pulled over the vehicle at the roadside. The car did not start immediately but started after about 30 mins and ran properly after that but with some minor vibration post 60 mph speed.

My mother is 75 years old. Here Corolla is 6 years old. She took it to Toyota on April 23rd, 2015 for the recall of the airbag (spiral cable sub assembly and cable kit) and updated software and install update label (Smart stop technology and elsbos update ecm software) to correct the recall issue. She was sent home as it was supposed to be fixed. On Friday April 24th, 2015 at 10pm she was driving home from an event at approx 45 mph the vehicle stalled. She took it to Toyota the next date on Saturday April 25th, 2015 at 11:00 am. Toyota inspected the vehicle and sent her home. On the way the home the same day at 5:26pm she was going approx 10 mph coming through a light and it stalled again. The engine kicked back in and then it stalled again. Her vehicle was running fine until Toyota changed out the recall parts. There is something very wrong with this and needs attention. Although there was not accident it was a close call she was almost rear ended. I am writing now because something needs to be addressed with Toyota and her car needs to be fixed in the same condition that it was prior to going to Toyota. Lori k. Miller nancy g. Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Toyota Corolla 11

Engine tries to stall at speeds of 50 to 40, more at 40. When this occurs the rpm needle jumps up past 3 then drops to below one comes up and jumps. I took it in to the dealer and they had just received a recall notice from Toyota,it recommended it be flashed to stop what they said was a miss fire, this was done on 12/05/11. I drove it home it started doing it again,so I took it back in they reflashed it said that it would be alright. Not so it continues to misfire and act like is fixing to stall. I took it back again the head of service drove it said it was jumping in and out of overdrive just drive it don't worry about it . Well it seems to be getting worse so I took it back in the service guy said after driving it was the best driving Corolla he had been in ,course I knew that was not so cause to this day it keeps trying to stall in traffic. The steering seems to be getting hard to control it weaves more than it should like the front end is out of alignment but if you let go it tracks straight. I am really afraid to drive this car if it does stall in traffic there is going to be a serious wreck. I contacted Toyota they said there is no recalls on the Corolla not true my paper work shows they did a service recall to the dealers. What should I do next? I use this car to drive my 87 year old mother to the store and doctor god forbid it stalls with me driving her somewhere. I am paying good money for something I'm afraid to drive,it's just not right I bought this thinking it was a reliable source of transportation and it's not it's scary. I feel this car has a major computer issue, it's going to turn out to be serious.

When I take my foot off the acclerator, it feels like I have the cruize control. The car deselerate very slowly for anywhere between . 5 to 1 mile then the rpm drops suddenly as it should when you first take your foot of the pedal. The other related problem is that if I'm just trying to maintain a constant speed anywhere between 50 and 60 miles/hr it feels like the engine stalls for a very brief moment then shortly after comes back to the original rpm. When I drive car down hill try to apply break to maintain the speed of the car acceleration increases suddenly 3 to 4 thousand rpm and after 3 to 4 seconds cars come to normal engine rpm both problems describe above are easily reproducable and my local Toyota dealer said its normal. Its very scary to drive this car and since 3 years I was complaining to local dealer and get same answer every time its normal. Please do some thing about this.

This happened at 8:30pm today and so the car service was already closed and I will have to wait till Friday morning to understand what caused this. Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla 19

The engine stalled lots of time when I used brake to stop at a stop sign, or when I drove at low speed in traffic, such as 1 to 5 mile per hour. I had to press gas at a stop sign while I put the car in parking position to keep the engine alive. It took the dealer more than one month to fix it. The first time the dealer returned it to me and told me the problem had been fixed, the car stalled within 200 ft after I left the dealer. I walked back and told the dealer. The dealer told me to drive it back to home and 'let the computer learn by itself'. I did as the dealer told me but the car stalled as before. I had to bring it back to the dealer. Dealer changed the computer for me. The engine-stall problem is solved. Mazda map download. Right now, the car (most probably the engine) still vibrates/shakes strongly when I stop the car at the stop sign, at the red light, and drive the car at very low speed (such as 1 to 5 mile per hour).

Engine Stall problem of the 2008 Toyota Corolla 20

Engine check light came on, without apparent reason (I. E. Not behind on maintenance schedule). Shortly after, engine started stalling; first time just fell like engine was being sluggish and needed to give more gas to get power; second time, car nearly fell still (down to a couple of mph's), even when applying serious gas (and clearly hitting high rpm & engine roaring loudly). Just managed to pull the car aside. When towtruck arrived 30 minutes later, problem had disappeared. . . (for now). A quick check on google sounds like this may be due to many causes, from simple air intake sensor, to more serious ecm problems. Either ways, having your engine stall suddenly seems pretty dangerous, especially if this happens in busy traffic. Plan to have this checked out immediately.

Engine Stall problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla 24

Hello,I am writing to you in relation to a recent problem I had with my 2006 Toyota Corolla. The short story is that the car's engine died while driving and wouldn't restart. I had to tow the car to a Toyota dealership where it was inspected and found that the electronic control module (ecm) had failed (error code p0607) and needed replacement. Since the car is still relatively new, I was astonished to find that the 'brain' of the car is out of order and has to be replaced. What's worse is that this problem could cause highly dangerous situations where the car's engine stalls in the middle of a highway while driving at 65 mph. . Read more..

Car stalled on highway at ~55 mph, and successfully restarted once. Stalled out again on highway later that day and needed tow to dealership. Dealership noted engine stalling below 1000 rpm, and could not communicate with computer (ecm). Dealership replaced ecm (89661-02k21) for free under warranty, and Toyota corp. Reimbursed for towing.

Engine Stall problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla 26

In may 21, 2009, when my husband was driving in a 45 mph road, the car speed suddenly couldn't maintain and started to decrease although the accelerator pedal was depressed. Then found the car engine stalled and couldn't restart. Fortunately, there was no other car hit his car when this happened. But engine suddenly stall while driving, especially in a highway could be life threatening problem, which could be even worse than sudden acceleration. I have read qcsreport00203 report regarding electronic throttle control systems in Toyota consumer complaints to NHTSA. In this report it states: it is frequently possible to determine whether an electronic throttle control system is used in an engine in a specific vehicle once the make, the model, the model year, and the corresponding Toyota engine family are identified. In 2007 Toyota Corolla owners' manual, page107, it clearly states: if engine speed does not increase when the accelerator pedal is depressed, there may be a problem somewhere in the electronic throttle control system. From this statement, it tells that Toyota does aware the engine sudden stall problem and the defectiveness of the electronic throttle control system. Toyota should take responsibility on 2007 Corolla as well.

Engine Stall problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla 27

While driving my 2006 Toyota Corolla, the vehicle gasoline engine stalled without warning. I was able to pull over out of traffic with no incident. I have great concern for safety of others since I normally drive on the major interstates. I tried to restart but no results. Vehicle had to be tolled to dealership. Dealership explained that it was the ecm or the engine computer that failed. This incident is similar to NHTSA investigation, #pe05029 dated may 31, 2005, where gasoline/electric hybrid vehicles gasoline engines would stall. Facts found that analysis of the warranty data indicated that over 97% of vehicles experiencing a gas engine stall resulted from an issue with the program logic in the electronic control module (ecm) system. Major concern is safety on major interstates at high speeds and the vehicle stalling out with no warning. The other concern is that it cost me $1,229. 69 to replace the ecm, plus $80. 25 to have it tolled to the dealership.

Vehicle was going about 45 mph when all of a sudden the engine stalled unexpectedly. Vehicle was then towed to a repair shop, and results showed that the timing chain bolt was too tight, which bent the valve, and totally ruined other engine parts. Vehicle was then towed to a dealer for repairs.

Engine Stall problem of the 2001 Toyota Corolla 29

On my 01 Toyota Corolla 's' series. When air conditioner was on and outside very hot engine stalled, engne light came on. Took into the dealership, found that there was a random misfire of the fuel injectors. Would cost $1000 to fix. Could not confirm if that truely was the problem. They could not recreate the prblem,bu it continued to reoccur. Dealership did not know the cause. Vehicle was three years old and had maintained service. Corolla bulletin indicated that that in 2000 had to replace injectors due to a manufacturer's defect.

problem #3

Corolla S 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,000 miles

AFTER HAVING THIS TO MY MECHANIC FOR THE SECOND TIME, WITH TWO FLATBED TOWING COSTS I THINK IT IS FIXED. I HAVE READ A LOT OF REVIEWS ABOUT 'ECM PROBLEMS' FROM CUSTOMERS , THAT TOYOTA ALSO HAD A RECALL ON ECM ISSUES ,I THINK MY MECHANIC FOUND A SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THE MECHANIC FOUND THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT PUMPING GAS. THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY IS MOUNTED IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK AND IS SUBMERGED IN THE GAS. ONE OF THE ELECTRICAL WIRES GOING TO THE PUMP AT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AT THE TOP OF THE PUMP WAS BURNED UP( METAL AND PLASTIC PARTS). AS THE USE OF THE PUMP HEATED THIS CONNECTION IT WOULD ARC AND BURN CAUSING INTERMITTENT FUEL PUMP OPERATION. THUS EXPLAINING WHEN CAR WAS COLD IT WOULD START THEN AFTER RUNNING AND SHUT OFF IT WOULD CRANK AND NOT START. REMEMBER THIS ITEM IS IN THE TOP INSIDE THE FUEL TANK(BOOM!). I THINK SOME OF THE SO CALLED 'ECM PROBLEMS' WERE REALLY THIS PROBLEM AND NEVER DIAGNOSED. STALLING,LOSS OF POWER AND NOT STARTING. TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE PICKED THIS UP ,BUT IT SEEMS THEY TAKE 4 YEARS TO ISSUE RECALLS.

Corolla 1.4L

  • Manual transmission
  • 50,000 miles

This is a great car however this problem has never been solved. If the car is driven at a constant speed it runs perfectly. But if you have to stop driving on a stop sign and start driving again the engine looses power and sometimes the engine shuts down and has to be started again. The symptoms are very similar to lack of fuel or ignition fault. It would be greatly appreciated if you can provide support to solve this issue.

Thank you in advance,

Car stalled at a light last evening, tried once or twice unsuccessfully to get it started. It would start but stall within 2 or 3 seconds. Finally got it started, but check engine light came on. Looked up that light in our manual, and it said take it to the dealer. We drove it about 15 miles, parked it to go into a store, and then it would not start at all. Couldn't get it towed til the next morning. Had it towed to our very good mechanic, who checked it and says it needs to be taken to dealership for a new computer, which should be under warranty.
